A drought in the UK? Sounds a bit unheard of for a country known for its grey skies and rain, but it has been a remarkably dry month this past July and now leading into August across much of Britain, and for parts of the country, severe drought conditions are prominent. Large parts of the country are now under hosepipe restrictions, and with barely any meaningful rainfall for weeks, several regions are experiencing severe drought conditions. This is not just an unusually dry and hot summer, it is a clear sign that tracking your weather, rather than relying on national averages, has never mattered more.
Just how dry has it really been
Thames Water's ban came into effect on 23 July, following similar restrictions already in place from Affinity Water, Anglian Water, Cambridge Water, South East Water, and Southern Water. These bans are not decided on a single hot day, water companies look at total rainfall over the weeks and months, alongside reservoir and river levels, and this past July's totals have been low enough in many areas to tip conditions from dry to drought. A long dry spell can sometimes fade out.
